Students are intrduced to scientific perspectives on happiness by examining key theories, addressing common myths and misconceptions, and exploring how happiness is understood across different cultural contexts. The module also looks at the biology of belief, highlighting how thought patterns and meaning-making shape emotional experiences, and familiarises students with scientific methods used to measure happiness and well-being, helping ground subjective experiences in research-based understanding.
Module 2: Behavioural Aspects & Happiness
Students deepen their understanding of well-being by exploring optimism and emotional resilience, alongside how emotions are expressed and perceived through body language and micro-expressions. The module introduces key elements of emotional intelligence, including empathy and compassion, and examines sources of unhappiness by unpacking reward systems, motivation, and the role of money in well-being. It concludes with an exploration of creativity, intuition, and flow, highlighting how deep engagement leads to meaningful and fulfilling experiences.
Module 3: Neuroscience & Happiness
Module 3 introduces the neuroscience of happiness by exploring the brain and its major networks, the role of neurotransmitters, and the concept of neuroplasticity in shaping emotional well-being. It further examines how happiness is linked to executive functioning, with a focus on attentional processing, inhibitory control, and cognitive load, helping students understand how everyday mental processes influence emotional regulation and sustained well-being.
Module 4: Building Blocks of Change
Module 4 focuses on the science of cultivating a positive mindset, introducing evidence-based models of well-being such as the PERMA+4 framework and its practical application. The module explores the science of mindfulness and engagement, along with research on relationships and individual strengths, while also examining purpose, autonomy, and resilience as key elements that support sustained psychological well-being.
Module 5: Tools & Designs for Measurement of Happiness
Module 5 explores how design influences well-being by examining digital and multisensory approaches to happiness alongside spatial and environmental design principles. The module introduces students to how physical spaces, sensory inputs, and digital environments can be intentionally shaped to support emotional balance, engagement, and overall well-being in everyday settings.
